  • I agree with you on the brake theory. The adjusters are supposed to automatically adjust when you hit the brakes whilst backing up but as you pointed out the adjuster nut thingy always rusts and sticks together. Maybe some high temp anti seize would help but the real solution is disc brakes......you have a real flare for brake lines! If you stick the hose in a clear bottle of fluid you can pump the brakes till no bubbles come out you don't get fluid on the floor and you can bleed em by yourself. What ever you do don't ever over load your trailer.....bah ha ha ha!

  • I put the grease in a heavy plastic freezer zip top bag. Throw a bearing in and squeeze grease into it with no mess and no misses. One bearing at a time with some grease fill in the bag for each bearing. My trailer has electric drum brakes so I get the self adjusting type. There is a lockout for backing with surge brakes.

  • Hey Andrew, I do agree with you that there are many things that should be guaranteed to last the life of the vehicle (you used 50 years as an example), only real reason i see that companies do not do that is because they cant predict the driving style of every single person, many people are very hard on their vehicles which in turn reduces the lifespan of certain parts like brakes, transmissions, suspension, etc. So they dont do that because if they did, i could see many people who do not properly maintain their vehicles and who use their vehicles irresponsibly trying to take advantage of that "guarantee". thats just my thoughts though

  • Hi young Andrew, like the little lathes, is the light grey one a Colchester Lathe, or a copy of one perhaps ? - As a young man many years ago I worked on one, good solid small lathe, originally made about 15 miles from where I now retired to, right on the coast of North Essex - UK.

    ian buritian buritMåned siden
  • Hi young Andrew - TOP TIP/ Adjusting your drum brakes ? drill a hole in the FRONT face of your brake drum, the suitable size for a rubber press fit bung to fit, then adjusting your drum brakes becomes easier on each wheel AFTER taking the wheel off first.. add some high temp grease/ spray silicone/ WD 40 onto the adjuster threads first/ thats my thoughts anyway/ have a good day.. thanks for the video / Ian -- UK.

  • 13:00 There probably mobile home axles off of a 14 x 70 or something. They cut them down to size and welded them back together to make a heavy equipment trailer. 23:00 The other thing about them old axles is our mobile home axles have never been modified and there made exactly the same. That cylinder is designed to to allow for the axles to flex. That way they don't just break in two under heavy loads.

  • Andrew, there is a “U” shaped section that you put between pointless the hook and trailer. What is happening is when you apply the brakes the the trailer pushes forward on the truck applying the brakes. When you back up the brakes are being applied. Downhill the trailer is pulled away from the truck and brakes aren’t being applied. Old school tech! Or use this: www.centrevilletrailer.com/surge-brake-actuator-repair-parts/3956-mcmaster-carr-manual-reverse-lockout-valve.html

  • European surge brake manufacturers have a backmatic: if you reverse, the rear brake shoe is unwedged by its friction on the drum and gives way. It does need regular maintenance though, the Bowden cables need to be replaced every few years. But you buy a pair for under 30 bucks.

  • Unless you lock up the shoes during the adjustment process, you won't know for sure that both shoes are against the drum. Locking them up and then backing them off ensures that the brake shoes are centered in the drum. Also, a brake adjusting tool is worth it's weight in gold because it has a nice bend in it so you won't have to work around those u-bolts.

  • You don't have to drive the seals in until they stop. Flush with the hub works. A wood block will work as a stop.

  • Ease up on those seals, they just need to be flush with the lip of the drum. Also next time switch over to electric brakes. There way less problems than hydraulic.
